THC potency inflation by third-party testing labs has been an escalating feature of the cannabis industry since its legalization. In California, market forces and lack of regulation have allowed potency inflation to intensify in both its flagrancy and its pervasiveness, particularly within the last year. Two third-party testing labs in California, InfiniteCAL and Anresco, discuss how the industry got to this point, the different methods that labs use to inflate potency, and steps that can be taken to combat it.

Sarah Otis is the Manager of Quality and R&D Projects for Anresco Laboratories in San Francisco, California. Sarah is an analytical chemist with over a decade of experience in the cannabis industry spanning multiple legalized States. Sarah’s expertise is in quality assurance and regulatory compliance and for the last 7 years she has been focusing her skill set and efforts on advancing regulatory and R&D testing and laboratory operations for cannabis and hemp testing laboratories. Her experience and knowledge also branch into other aspects of the industry such as licensing, cultivation, extraction, and cannabis infused product formulation and production.

Erik grew up in San Diego, CA, and received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of California, Riverside. He continued his studies in Riverside to obtain a teaching credential and then taught high school chemistry in Burbank, CA, for five years. His passion for learning brought him back to San Diego to study organometallic chemistry in the Joint Doctoral Program at San Diego State University and the University of California, San Diego. His projects involved the development of catalysts for the selective migrations of double bonds in organic molecules. Erik’s focus since joining Infinite in 2019 has been the validation and development of potency, residual solvent, and terpenes analyses.

James focuses on laboratory informatics solutions for cannabis testing, biopharmaceutical, and other life sciences industries. James earned his BS in biochemistry from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and his MS in chemistry from St. Joseph’s University. He started his career at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in the Pharmacology and Developmental Chemotherapy laboratories developing and validating bioanalytical methods for novel anticancer drugs. In 1996, James moved to DuPont Pharmaceuticals at the Stine-Haskell Research Center. In the Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics Section, he supported regulated bioanalysis for the clinical trials of Sustiva (efavirenz), an antiviral medicine that prevents human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from multiplying. Focusing more on developing bioanalytical and pharmacokinetic data handling, storage, and retrieval methods led to a career dedicated to bioanalytical informatics, most recently at LabWare.

Eugene focuses on building analytics and data science solutions in a variety of different domains, including the cannabis testing space. Eugene earned his BA in Psychology from Arcadia University and his MS in Business Analytics from Drexel University.  He started his career working in behavioral research at various institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University, where he learned that his passion lied in making more immediate impacts in organizations by helping to make data-driven decisions. After obtaining his Master's degree, Eugene joined CompassRed, a data science and analytics firm, as a data scientist who worked on a variety of different analytics service projects, helping organizations make the most out of their data. More recently, CompassRed was acquired by LabWare, and while continuing some service work, Eugene has transitioned into using his skills and knowledge to help develop product solutions both in the cannabis testing space, as well as enabling analytics for other LabWare customers.
